Development of an optimal aeration for fouling control in membrane bioreactors

Abstract:
Bentonite filtration experiments by use of a hollow fiber membrane module submerged in a bubble column reactor were conducted. It could be shown that an optimal air flow rate exists, beyond which an increased air flow rate had virtually no effect on the membrane performance and that a shorter aeration cycle leads to a better membrane performance. Finally, the correlation between the membrane filtration performance and the bubble-induced hydrodynamics around the submerged hollow fiber bundle was examined.
