Wolfgang Marquardt, M. Amrhein:

Development of a linear distillation model from design data for process control

Computers & Chemical Engineering, 1994, 18, 349-353

Abstract:
A novel approach to approximate modeling for multivariable controller design of binary distillation columns is suggested. The modeling idea draws on the wave propagation phenomena characterizing distillation column dynamics. The development of the model only requires knowledge about steady-state design data, including holdups and stationary concentration profiles. No dynamic simulation is required to determine the model parameters. Typically, a fifth--order linear model is obtained. Comparison of the deduced linear approximate model with the rigorous model shows an excellent average match of the process nonlinearities.
