Jörg Hackenberg:

Outstanding research issues and opportunities in modelling of unit operations

Cape.Net BRITE-EURAM (BRRT-97-5011) European Theamtic Network in Computer-aided Process Engineering

Abstract:
Mathematical modelling of process systems plays a crucial role in the use of computer-aided process engineering (CAPE) technology since applications are almost exclusively model-based. Recent trends in process engineering have posed new requirements on the models used in CAPE. Process intensification asks for complex, customised models of unit operations combining models of different physical and chemical phenomena on different spatial and temporal scales. Constraints derived from environmental and quality requirements demand detailed models considering not only the main components but also the influence of trace components on the behaviour of unit processes. Applications in process control and operations need dynamic models on different time scales. Generally the development of a detailed model of a unit operation provides means for a thorough understanding of the unit by removing levels of approximation.
