Modeling the influence of biofouling on the operation of submerged membranes

6. Aachener Tagung Siedlungswasserwirtschaft und Verfahrenstechnik, Aachen, Germany, P13-1 bis P13-10

Abstract:
A model to describe the influence of membrane biofouling on the operation of submerged membrane filtration processes is developed. While several phenaomena related to biofouling have been described in the literature on various levels of detail, no integrated model to predict its effects on a macroscopic level based on rigorous modeling has been proposed before. The model considers transport phenomena of microbes, EPS, and water, as well as growth and decay processes of the two later ones. The simulation results are in line with current process insight and with practical experiences and therefore very promising. The model is added to the complex membrane filtration model that has been developed at LPT.
