Conceptual Information Modeling for Computer Aided Support of Chemical Process Design

Work processes in chemical engineering are governed by the use, handling and production of information. Different types of data and documents are handled within different software tools. For an integration of these tools and thus for an improvement of the design processes, a thorough understanding of the information handled is needed. Within this thesis, the conceptual information model CLiP is presented. The main goal of this model framework is an improvement of the understanding of information structures in chemical engineering. Due to its meta models and partial models CLiP has a well-defined and extensible structure. It can thus build the basis for the integration of existing information models and the development of new ones. Information models can be used for the development of specific software support tools. As an example of such a model implementation, a chemical design database built on the basis of CLiP is presented. Further, an outlook is given towards an integrated tool environment for chemical engineering.
