Identification of liquid-vapor fluctuations between nucleate and film boiling in natural convection

In: M. Lehner, F. Mayinger (Eds.): Engineering Foundation Conference 'Convective Flow and Pool Boiling II', Irsee, Germany, May 18-23, 1997, 79-86

Abstract:
An apparatus to measure simultaneously the entire boiling curve and the liquid-vapor fluctuations above the heater has been developed. The test heater is electrically heated and consists of a copper block (diameter 34 mm, 10.5 mm thick) with a nickel layer of 20 micrometers thickness on the surface. Experiments are carried out under pool boiling conditions with a horizontal heater surface, using FC-72 as test fluid. A fiber-optic probe with a tip diameter of 10 micrometers has been developed to measure the liquid-vapor fluctuations at distances between 0.01 mm and 1 mm from the boiling surface.
