Scenario-integrated modeling and optimization of dynamic systems

To assess the consequences of exceptional events such as failures and sudden changes in product demand or raw material prices is of great interest in the operation of chemical processes. Such an exceptional event and the resulting behavior of the process will be called a scenario in this paper. A method for their rigorous incorporation into the optimization of dynamic systems is presented allowing the determination of operational strategies which are economically optimal and which keep the plant within a chosen regime in the state space even for a number of possible scenarios. The derived method is based on a model formulation which contains both continuous and discrete dynamics. Exploiting the particular discrete structure of this hybrid model, a numerical optimization technique is discussed which enables the treatment of even highly nonlinear processes. The applicability of the new method is demonstrated by presenting two examples of different complexity.
