Abstract:
This work presents a synthesis method which incorporates robust stability using the normal vector approach [2, 3]. A superstructure approach is used for the connection of the different process units and reflects all possible flowsheets. The goal of this work is to find an optimal flowsheet structure and a robustly stable operating point that minimizes an overall cost function. The parametric uncertainty considered may either result from uncertainties in parameters (e.g. reaction kinetic constants, heat and mass transfer coefficients etc.) or from process uncertainty (slow disturbance in load, quality of raw materials etc.). This work extends the normal vector approach, which so far assumes a fixed flowsheet and thus considers only continuous degrees of freedom for optimization. Hence, we generalize to integer degrees of freedom to support decision making on the flowsheet level. The problem formulation results in a nonlinear mixed-integer problem with robust stability constraints.
