Method for the design of ternary heteroazeotropic rectification
Chemie Ingenieur Technik, 2002, 74(10), 1428-1433
Abstract:
Complex distillation columns and hybrid separation processes represent economically attractive process alternatives for the separation of nonideal mixtures in the chemical industry. Heterogeneous azeotropic distillation is such a hybrid separation process, which is characterized by coupling the column with a decanter. The phase split in this decanter is used in order to facilitate the separation. Shortcut Models are an advantageous tool for the analysis and synthesis of hybrid separation processes because of the existence of a large number of different design alternatives. The strong nonidealities of heterogeneous mixtures make the development and application of such models a difficult task. Some difficulties are discussed in this report. On the basis of these insights, a new efficient design procedure for the heterogeneous azeotropic distillation is presented.
