Recovery of itaconic acid from bioprocesses with membranes for the production of bio fuels

The aim of the project is to isolate itaconic acid from a continous fermentation process with membranes, in order to provide them for subsequent downstream process steps.

Within the cluster of excellence itaconic acid is produced out of green biomass in a continuous fermentation process for the production of biofuels. The aim of the project is to recover this itaconic acid continuously out of the reactor with a membrane process using microfiltration membranes. This way a constant product concentration in the permeate can be achieved, which is an advantage for subsequent downstream process steps as for example electrodialysis. Regarding the membrane process, adequate operating parameters need to be found in order to assure a high product recovery rate of itaconic acid.
