CarboMembran - CarboMembran

Aim of the project CarboMembran is to use CNTs to develop ecologically friendly concepts to produce drinking water and to separate gases.

All over the world the production of drinking water is extremly important. It has a central part in nutrition and health care, but also in agriculture and as solvent for industrial processes. A sustainable production of water is one of the big challanges for the next centuries. For the production of drinking water sea water desalination will play a more and more important role. In this context innovative membranes can make a major contribution. There is proof, that CNT membrane show a higher flux while using less energy compared to conventional membranes. This membranes can also be used to separate gas, one example is the seequestration of flue gas from large power plants.

Aim of the project CarboMembran is to use CNTs to develop ecologically friendly concepts to produce drinking water and to separate gases. For this purpose new mixed matrix membranes will be developed with incorporated CNTs, which work more efficient and increase productivity. For desalination the membrane flux is 40 times higher than for state of the art membranes. In gas separation this CNT loaded membranes will be used to separate greenhouse gases from the fluegas of large power plants.
