Since December 2016, Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Ronald Gebhardt is the director of the new Chair "Soft Matter Process Engineering (SMP)" of Aachener Verfahrenstechnik

Here he briefly presents himself and his work:

During my PhD at the Technische Universität München and later during my postdoc time at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in Grenoble, France I have intensively investigated the molecular structure of biopolymers and colloids using scattering, imaging and diffraction methods. My experiments addressed structures in dilute and concentrated solutions as well as in dense media such as in fibers, films, deposits and crystals. I combined these experimental methods with sub-micrometer-sized probes and corresponding high resolution scanning devices to resolve inhomogeneities on a meso- and macroscale. During my habilitation at the chair for Food and Bioprocess Engineering at the Technische Universität München I observed in-situ structure formation processes to study molecular structure-processing relationships in foods.

I’m fascinated by the diversity of animate matter and the challenges of a sustainable and livable future. A large number of products that are used in daily life (polymers, foams or gels) and many biological systems can be considered as soft matter i.e. they easily deform under external stresses. Although the definition of soft matter does not include any length scale, stress-relaxation relations are, besides composition, mainly determined by molecular structures which either form or become modified during processing. It can therefore be assumed that structural research combined with soft matter approaches will significantly contribute to meet challenges on the research field of soft matter process engineering.

At the RWTH Aachen my studies will focus on the formation and functionalization of soft matter, from theoretical aspects and structural research to applied soft materials design.
