18th International PhD Seminar on Chromatographic Separation Science (SoCSS 2023)

  Logo of the conference

The 18th International PhD Seminar on Chromatographic Separation Science (SoCSS 2023) will be hosted by RWTH Aachen University and Forschungszentrum Jülich. The seminar is scheduled from 05.06.2023 until 07.06.2023. More details on program and location will follow soon.

SoCSS is a seminar for presentation and discussion of research in the field of chromatography and allied techniques. Participants will have the opportunity to present their work and build their professional network in a relaxed and casual environment. It is anticipated to attract young researchers all over the world in the relevant field. The exchange with fellows and the established network will be beneficial to shape their future development as next-generation experts. Seminar participation is however not limited to PhD students. Master students, postdocs and alumni from industry are also very welcome to share their scientific contributions and provide valuable feedback.

Presentations will cover a wide range of topics relevant to cutting-edge research, new technologies, and emerging areas in the following fields:

  • Fundamentals of chromatography / Process engineering
    • Process development, intensification and scale-up
    • High-throughput (HTP) approaches and solutions
    • Continuous processing
  • Computational methods
    • Chromatography modeling, simulation and optimization
    • Model-based process design and control
    • Machine learning
  • Alternative separation methods and modifications
    • Liquid-liquid chromatography (LLC)
    • 3D printed stationary phases
    • Novel separation/interaction techniques
  • Analytical techniques
    • Method development
    • Process analytical technology (PAT)

Call for abstracts and Registration

Submission of Abstracts and Registration will open shortly.

The SoCSS seminar has been established as forum for current PhD students from the area of chromatography to share their work and connect with peers. Every PhD student is invited to give a presentation about their work (approx. 15 min talk + 5 min questions and discussion). The organizing committee highly encourages all registrants to submit an abstract for a conference talk. There will be no possibility for a poster session.

SoCSS in the past

The seminar was founded by Prof. Henner Schmidt-Traub1, Prof. Klaus Unger2, and Dr. Reinhard Ditz3 in 2001 and initially named as “PhD Seminar Preparative Chromatography”. Prof. Massimo Morbidelli4 and Prof. Andreas Seidel-Morgenstern5 have been showing great dedication to the seminar organization and it has been eventually renamed as International PhD Seminar on Chromatographic Separation Science (SoCSS). Currently, the seminar is organized annually throughout Europe, mainly in Germany.
