The OptoEcon-Toolbox is a modular software environment for the realization of different control architectures for chemical and energy processes. This includes the possibility to simulate such processes and optimize them with sampled-data controllers. The OptoEcon-Toolbox stands out due to the following three key features. First, its modularity allows the realization of general multi-layer control architectures. Second, its interfaces to powerful numerical software allow formulating the control and plant surrogate models in different modeling languages, such as Modelica or gPROMS. Third, plant-model mismatch can be simulated in several ways. Besides adding noise or disturbances, it is also possible to have different models in the plant surrogate and controllers to represent reality better. The OptoEcon-Toolbox provides the necessary framework for new control and estimation algorithms. It has already been applied successfully in simulation and in lab-scale experiments in academia. The OptoEcon-Toolbox is already in use in several projects, including industrial applications.
