The Institute of Energy and Climate Research IEK-10 at Forschungszentrum Jülich focusses on the optimal design and operation of integrated, decentralized energy systems with a high share of renewable energy. Computer simulation and numerical optimization are used to arrive at efficient, reliable and cost-effective solutions. Members of the institute contribute both to the development of mathematical models and to the development of improved simulation methods and optimization algorithms. Methods and software tools are validated against operating data of real systems. The institute also engages in the development of specially adapted methods and algorithms that exploit the potential of high performance computing (HPC) with the aim of solving particularly difficult and complex problems. IEK-10 is headed by the directors Prof. Dr.-Ing. André Bardow (industrial energy systems group), Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dirk Müller (buildings and districts group) and Prof. Alexander Mitsos, Ph.D. (optimization methods group).
