This course deals with the mechanical unit operations in chemical engineering. A specific focus lies on particle and separation technologies mainly with at least one solid phase. Main topics of the lecture are

  • Basics of the principle of similarity
  • Approaches and equipment of milling and grinding
  • Surface tension and atomization
  • Measurement and plotting of particle size distribution curves
  • Sieving: Principles, equipment, fractionation curves
  • Migration of solid particles in fluids
  • Modelling and design of centrifuges
  • Design equations for cyclones
  • Flow through a fixed bed, Filtration
  • Modeling of filtration equipment and filter media
  • Mixing and stirring
