Our Profile

The chair of Process Systems Engineering (AVT.SVT) is part of Aachener Verfahrenstechnik at RWTH Aachen University, was founded in 2012 and is directed by Prof. Alexander Mitsos, PhD.
Our research covers different disciplines by combining methods of classical engineering, computational science and mathematics.
The method oriented research is focused on the development of techniques for mathematical modelling as well as process development and control. Besides that, importance is placed on the systematic integration of experimentation and modelling plus the development of numerical algorithms and software tools. The method oriented emphasis is supplemented by industrial applications of our work.

Your Profile

You have received an excellent university degree (master or equivalent) in computational engineering, mathematics, computer science, chemical/process engineering, energy systems engineering, or a related subject. You have excellent programming skills (preferably C++). Strong project management and communication skills are indispensable. Knowledge of German is not required.

Your Duties and Responsibilities

Process engineering is concerned with the transformation of material in industrial processes, e.g., to produce energy carriers, food, or medicine. The focus lies on current global challenges such as ensuring clean water supply, supporting the transition from fossil to renewable feedstock and energy sources, or storing renewable electricity. For decades already, process engineering has heavily relied on computational methods to design and analyze new processes or monitor and control existing plants. This entails the use of various methods of scientific computing, in particular mathematical optimization.
The resulting problems are often nonconvex nonlinear programs (NLP) or mixed-integer nonlinear programs (MINLP). For such problems, methods for deterministic global optimization are required to guarantee optimal solutions (within a tolerance). Since these methods are computationally intensive, further developments are needed to make problems of practical interest tractable. The Chair for Process Systems Engineering (AVT.SVT) at RWTH Aachen University develops such methods together with the Institute for Energy Systems Engineering (IEK-10) at Forschungszentrum Jülich. These methods are also implemented in the open-source software MAiNGO.
Your task consists in developing and analyzing new methods for deterministic global optimization. This includes new theory and algorithms as well as concepts for efficient use and scalability on modern computer
architectures. You collaborate closely with developers and users of these optimization methods from the fields of energy and process engineering as well as machine learning.

What We Offer

The successful candidate will be employed under a regular employment contract.
The position is to be filled at the earliest possible date and offered for a fixed term of two years.
It is intended to extend the initial contract period by two further years.
The fixed-term employment is possible as it constitutes one of the fixed-term options of the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (German Act on Fixed-term Scientific Contracts).
This is a full-time position.
The successful candidate has the opportunity to pursue a doctoral degree in this position.
The salary is based on the German public service salary scale (TV-L).
The position corresponds to a pay grade of EG 13 TV-L.
