Electrochemistry is getting increasing attention for efficient and environmentally friendly energy storage and conversion. Electrical energy can, for example, be stored in chemicals like hydrogen or be the driving force for the synthesis of platform chemicals. This course introduces the fundamental principles of electrochemistry. It covers the thermodynamics and kinetics of electrochemical reactions as well as the influences of transport phenomena. In addition, relevant principles of heterogeneous catalysis and electrochemical methods are discussed.

The second part of the lecture covers the design of electrochemical reactors, modifications for different uses and important characteristics. This knowledge is required to build an industrial process. For that matter, the course exemplarily discusses several industrial processes from the field of electrosynthesis, corrosion and environmental electrochemistry.
