Two girls at the AVT laboratory AVT

This year at girls day, Anna and Smara visited us! At first, these two curious girls had an insight in our IT-department. “Everything has its order“ Smara commented. Together with our IT-specialists Jutta and Sascha the girls scouted our digital infrastructure- and our big server-rooms in the new NGP² building.
After lunch, our two junior researchers met Patrick from the Chair of Chemical process engineering. “At CVT, we try to spin fibers with customized geometries”, so the scientific assistant. “And who could be a greater idol than nature itself?”
After a short plan discussion for the day, eyes got wide: “Spiders?”
But they got that right. Short time later, they visited Ms. Dr. Anna-Christin Joel, in Bio II of RWTH. She is a known specialist for spinning and spiders. We had a close look at our biological idols in her terraria. Plus, we got more information about her ”not-so-small 8-leg employees”.
Back at AVT, we tried to dissolve natural silk and precipitate the solution later on. A fascinating experiment, which needs attention when it comes to safety and handling issues. But Anna and Smara took that challenge easily: they weighed precisely and handled the solutions correctly. The experiment succeeded and both young ladies could be thrilled for science a bit more.
